Friends Committee

Welcome to our wonderful Waihi School.

Waihi Parents and Friends are just what it says, the Parents and Friends of Waihi School.  Up until recently we've had a large committee who met twice a term to talk things over and plan but we have found it harder and harder to get a group together as more of us are working these days so we have recently decided to change the format of the committee.  How it works is rather than having a PTA we have a small group of parents who work off our list of school events, figure out what needs to be done and then we send out emails to a larger group of parents who can offer to help when and where they are able to.  This is where we would love your involvement.  Please let the school know that we can have your email address and we'll keep you in the loop.  It's a great way to get yourself involved in the happenings at the school and meet some other parents along the way.  Here are some of the things we do......

  • We organise to meet new parents at a local cafe after they've dropped their lads off at the beginning of the term, to offer friendship, support and advice if required as well as the chance to meet some of the other new parents.
  • Manage a lot of the school merchandise for sale at school events and through the school shop.
  • Provide occasional baking for the tea and coffee table at lunchtime quad picnics for other parents to enjoy.
  • Aim to organise a few social occasions during the year, usually tacked onto school events, for the parents to meet each other and catch up at.
  • Help out with uniform fittings for new boys and support the school at publicity events like Open Days and A&P Shows if required.
  • Do a little light fundraising for our own projects and then provide the occasional gift to the school.

Last year at the suggestion of some of our parents we tried a couple of new innovations including running a school wide farmers market on cross country day.  This was fun, really successful and added hugely to the character of the event.  We ran a sausage sizzle at the school for the South Canterbury Cross Country finals and I think this will become a regular feature on the calendar.  We provide soup, rolls and filled croissants at each of our music performance evenings so the parents who came to see their young musicians could grab a snack and meet other parents during the school dinner break.

We are always keen for new ideas and suggestions from parents as our time at Waihi is rather fleeting and it is a very special place to be a part of.  We hope you enjoy your time here.

Kind regards

Sarah MacLeod and Annie Studholme
