16th June 2017
The South Canterbury Primary Schools’ Sports Association Cross Country was held at Waihi on Wednesday 14 June, with over 470 children from Years 5-8 competing.
The school was humming with competitors, parents, siblings and grandparents, and cars for miles on the school boundaries. The Friends Committee were rugged up in their winter woollies (it was freezing outside) selling masses of sausages and drinks, and the coffee cart ladies were run off their feet keeping up with everyone wanting hot drinks.
The day started at 10.30am with a competitor’s walk around the course. This was both enjoyable and entertaining as the children and teachers were all told it involved two river crossings but some still chose to wear jeans and gumboots more designed for city puddles than Waihi rivers, and a young girl was heard to ask if the rivers were heated for the races!
All the races were very close and the Waihi boys who competed ran brilliantly. The day was a great success and the boys that placed in the top 20 are eligible for the South Canterbury Cross County squad.
A big THANK YOU to Mr Brighouse and Mr Sharp for all their hard work in putting together the course.
The results from our boys are as follows:
