22nd July 2017
Following on from the success in our heat in Ashburton, our Year 8 team of Mitchell Bowmar, Scott Gregan, Elliot Wilson and Sam Wilson made a slightly longer journey to Rolleston’s Clearview Primary School on Wednesday 28th June to compete in the Canterbury Semi-Final.
The boys worked tremendously well as a team and clearly had a plan, striking early and putting points on the board with their challenge to build a wind turbine capable of powering a crane to lift a 300 gram mass. The boys led the competition all night, only for Ladbrooks School to snatch the lead with 10 minutes to go. The boys hit back with 58 seconds to go, to tie the competition!
It was a great result considering we finished 3rd in our heat and the boys can now look forward to the Grand Final in Christchurch.
The Grand Final for the Canterbury region was held at Heaton Normal Intermediate School in Christchurch on Tuesday 4th July. The boys were excited and a little bit nervous but were confident in their own ability, and they again performed brilliantly and quickly went into the lead designing and building a boom camera with motors and lights that had 360° capability.
They led the competition all night but in the final minutes two other schools managed to accumulate some more points and the boys had to settle for third place. I was very proud of them and they represented the school with distinction.
