16th August 2017
On Friday 11th August eleven Waihi boys participated in the Timaru/Oamaru Chess Power Regional Tournament hosted at Roncalli College. This is one of a series of tournaments around the country held as qualifiers for the National Interschools Finals to be held in Hamilton this October.
Waihi had already secured entry to the National finals for our Intermediate team and individuals but this event was even stronger than the earlier qualifier in Term 2, so it was interesting to see how the boys would fare against a wider opposition.
One hundred pupils gathered in the Roncalli School hall and it was another fantastic day’s chess.
Our Intermediate team again won in impressive style from St Joseph’s Timaru. Top scorers this time being Charlie Burdon and Josh Mills both on 4½/7, Oscar Todhunter on 5/7 and Lachie Short, who also won the individual gold with a perfect 7/7.
Even more exciting was the result of our Junior team. With only four players, and the top four scores counting, every boy had to be on his game. Edward Bodie-Healy and Will Saunders played gritty chess scoring 3½/7 and 4/7 respectively, whilst Gus Carr on 6/7 won individual bronze, and Luke Skinner followed Lachie’s lead with a perfect 7/7 to take individual gold.
The team total was good enough to win outright first place in the Junior competition ahead of Gleniti School and to join our intermediate team as qualifiers for the National Finals in Hamilton next term.
