The Waihi Colts team of Will Studholme (Captain), Harry Carr, Harry Munro, Liam Suddaby, Harry Hanson, Angus Carr, Alex Steele, Ryda Winter-Hathaway (goalie) and Will Saunders maintained an unbeaten record this season, winning the final (7-0) in the inaugural 7-a-side Primary Competition last Tuesday night and securing the Hockey South Canterbury 7-a-side Trophy.
The team played some amazing hockey throughout the season, developing their passing, dribbling and tactical awareness as the season progressed.
While the boys thought playing 7-a-side hockey wasn't going to be fun, what it did was enable them to get more time on the ball and develop positional play in a smaller area, which has allowed them to develop effective passing and awareness of where their team mates are.
Four players, Will Studholme, Harry Carr, Harry Munro and Liam Suddaby, have gained regional selection into the South Canterbury Year 6 Development team which has games against representative teams from other provinces in the near future. Good luck to these boys representing South Canterbury.
Thanks to all the parents who helped transport boys, assisted with duties, gave support from the side line and yelled encouragement.
Mrs Colleen Suddaby, Coach
At the start of the hockey season may of the Waihi 8s had never played hockey before but that did not take away from the excitement they had for the upcoming season.
All this excitement and enthusiasm showed during practices and especially during games as it was impossible to slow any of them down.
These boys carried this attitude throughout the hockey season and with every game their confidence grew.
I am proud to say that after such a great season, the Waihi 8s placed first in the 6-a-side Grade, winning the Hockey South Canterbury Loomes Family Trophy.
Congratulations to Ethan Foote, Jonty Pye, Darcy Laidlaw, Charles Hall, James Flockton, Sam Roadley and Edward Bodie-Healy (absent from photo).
