10th November 2017
Waihi travelled to St Andrew’s College with the 1st and 2nd XI Cricket teams and the Waihi Tennis team for our annual summer sports fixture.
The cricket games were very exciting with the St Andrew’s teams bowling very well and restricting the 1st XI to a modest 130 over 35 overs. The Waihi team bowled and fielded even better and stopped St Andrew’s 20 runs short. An exceptional performance by the Waihi team and the first well-deserved victory over St Andrew’s in a long time.
The 2nd XI were up against a strong team and batted first. Although the boys only managed to get the score into the 90s, there was some very strong batting by Waihi, but the difficulty was that the St Andrew’s bowling was very good. Unfortunately, the boys did not manage to get a win, but all showed true Waihi spirit.
In the tennis, Waihi was up against a very strong St Andrew’s side. We narrowly lost the doubles games with all matches being close. All the boys showed a lot of grit in the singles with stand-out performances by Tom Taylor and Harry Smith. Tom’s rubber was the last game and was very close, and eventually he won against the St Andrew’s number one player, which meant the tennis finished on a high.
The day was played in great spirits and all the boys loved the games, as well as the lunch and afternoon tea.
Thanks to St Andrew’s College for once again putting on a great day of sport.
