25th May 2018
On the first Sunday of the last school holidays (15 April) the Waihi Under 11 and Under 13 teams represented the school at the Pleasant Point ‘Tens’ Tournament, which had been cancelled the previous year due to inclement weather conditions.
The tournament was very well run, with 500 players from Under 8 to Under 13 competing for the medals.
The Under 11s played well and won all the games in their pool without any tries scored against them. They came up against the Pirates from Dunedin in the final. In the first half Waihi played well and scored first and went into half time 5-0 up. But in the second half the Pirates came out strong, Waihi defended well for most of the second half with the Pirates scoring 2 late tries to win the match 10-5.
The Under 13s won one of their three round-robin matches and lost their 5th v 6th playoff match against Geraldine.
All the Waihi boys played very well and the coaches were proud of them.
Because of the holiday time period many players were unavailable, so our Under 10 and Under 12 teams couldn’t be put together, and those in the Under 11 and 13
teams were very much a ‘local’ combination. It should also be mentioned that Will Saunders ended up playing for Mackenzie Under 13, who were a little short on numbers, and Will managed to score three tries for them!
Thanks to all the coaches for making this possible.
