29th June 2018
The South Canterbury Cross Country was run at Waihi again this year over the same course that the Waihi boys ran earlier in the month.
The event had been rescheduled from Tuesday 12 June due to rain and cold. Thursday had a lot better weather, it was still cold but bright and sunny.
The event was attended by over 500 children competing in Years 5 to 8 and many parents.
The day started at 10.00am with a competitors’ walk round the course. This was both enjoyable and entertaining as the children and teachers were all told it involved three river crossings but some still chose to wear jeans and gumboots more designed for city puddles that Waihi rivers!
This was the fifth walk round as a number of groups had come to Waihi the previous week and over the weekend.
The course was very slippery and after the final Year 8 boys race a well worked track was evident.
All the races were very close and the Waihi boys who competed ran brilliantly. The day was a great success with a number of our boys gaining entry into the South Canterbury Cross Country training squad.
The Waihi boys that placed in the top 20 for each grade were:
YEAR 6 BOYS 3rd - Riley Lennox
YEAR 7 BOYS 1st - Will Saunders
3rd - Will Studholme
9th - Edward Bodie-Healy
15th - Louis Hastie
YEAR 8 BOYS 2nd - Will Hancox
3rd - Malachy Cleland
6th - Oscar Chaffey
15th - Damon Johnson
