29th June 2018
The Year 5 and 6 boys had been training for five weeks with Lynda Brodie to put together a Jump Jam performance. This is the first time Waihi have entered a team in the event, and although some boys have competed in the past through their previous school, the team was mainly novices.
They had been training hard at lunchtimes and breaks with nine boys until the Monday before the competition when two boys were off school through illness. After a quick reshuffle and a lot more practice, the Waihi lads (Ethan Crilly, Mitchell Johnson, Riley Lennox, Era Nauhria, Patrick Raymond, Liam Suddaby and Oscar Talbot) were ready to go.
The withdrawal of two boys did mean the team had to move categories from Novice to ‘Open Boys’, a category that is fiercely contested mainly by Year 7 and 8 teams who had been training all term. Our boys, unfazed by the competition, performed amazingly in the heats and gained a top three position which meant they were in the finals later that same day.
At 6.00pm the boys showed up and all were stunned with the number of teams and competitors at the venue. The boys again were terrific and both Lynda and I believe they performed better in the evening that in the heats. They earned a commendable third place in South Canterbury and are all looking forward to competing again next year.
