Aoraki Maths Competition

20th August 2018

On Tuesday 8th of August, Malachy, Josh, Jack Scott and I travelled to Timaru Boys’ High School, along with a team from Mrs Heffernan’s class (Hugh, Jack Neal, Ashton and Ryan) to compete in the Aoraki Maths Year 8 section.

The competition was made up of 20 questions on little bits of paper that you need to answer and get correct before moving on to the next one. There was a 30 minute time limit.

We felt confident going into it as I was in the team that won the Year 7 section last year, and Malachy had experience at the Year 8 level. We were quick out of the blocks and were two ahead within the first five questions, and then we got stumped on one which took a few minutes. Once we had finally figured it out we sped through right to the finish, passing once and finishing with around 5 minutes to spare.

With a final score of 19/20, we were five ahead of second place. A great competition and also well done to the other team who were only a few points off second.
