Chess

19th September 2018

On Monday 17th September six Waihi boys travelled to Christchurch to take part in the Canterbury Individual Chess Championships. The competition was open to all students in the Years 1-9 and a great day was had by all.

We had four Year 7 boys entered and they all performed well, final positions being:

    Edward Bodie-Healy   13th

    Will Saunders             =7th

    Gus Carr                    =3rd

    Luke Skinner              2nd

It was an outstanding performance from Luke who went into the last round in equal first place, having won all of his games and narrowly lost to the eventual champion.

Our two Year 8 boys played alongside Year 9s on the day. The Year 8 results were:

    Freddy Backhouse      =2nd

    Lachie Short               1st

Lachie was a little disappointed not to win the overall Year 8/9 title but a blunder in a winning position against the Year 9 leader cost him the game … these things happen!

It is almost the end of an exciting chess season however we just have the small matter of the National Finals next month. Lachie and Luke will be playing in the National Individual Tournament and then the following day our Intermediate team of Lachie, Luke, Freddy, Gus and Will compete in the teams event.

Practise hard over the holidays boys and good luck for the trip to Auckland at the end of October.

Mr Short
