Waihi travelled to Christchurch for the winter sports fixture with St Andrew’s College. We left at 7:30am and the games began at 10:00am with hockey at Nunweek Park. This was the start of a busy day for many of the boys that were playing two sports. What was great was that we could get all Year 7 and 8 boys involved in this fixture. 74 boys in total participated.
In the hockey, the 1st XI had a very comprehensive win which saw them having the ability to move boys into foreign positions. The final score was 10-0. The 2nd XI played against a very strong St Andrew’s girls 1st XI. It was a very tight game that saw St Andrew’s scoring close to the final whistle. This meant a 3-4 loss. In the third game we put together a team of boys that weren’t involved in the Football or Rugby. This time had a very strong 2-2 draw.
Our 1st XI Football had a 7-3 loss to a impressive St Andrews team. The positive of this was a 3-3 second half. For me the highlight of the day was the 2nd XI Football who played out an impressive draw. For many of this team it was their first fixture and they played with great heart.
In a very even game, the rugby 1st XV lost 47-21. This game was broken apart by a St Andrew’s boy that scored all of their tries. Our Waihi boys play their hearts for the last game of the season. A great team effort.
The sportsmanship and pride shown by players of both schools was exemplary as was the never give up attitude of every individual, no matter what the scoreboard was showing.
