9th November 2018
Over the last weekend in October two boys, Lachie Short and Luke Skinner, competed in the New Zealand Chess Power Champions Trophy. There were 247 players from around New Zealand who had qualified from regional competitions competing in Auckland. The event was played as an Open Under 18 competition. Both of the boys finished in the top half with Lachie top scoring on 6/9 to finish =22nd in the Open U18 section and winning an excellence award.
The next day three more boys, Freddy Backhouse, Angus Carr and Will Saunders, joined Lachie and Luke to compete in the National Intermediate Teams events. In their debut at the Team Nationals last year our boys found it very tough going, with Waihi placed last. This year they improved that to finish in the top half =11th out of the 27 Intermediate Team. A fantastic achievement, well done boys! Lachie was on top boards all day and finished with 7/9 and =4th placed intermediate player in the country.
My huge thanks to the parents who assisted with the boys over the weekend – Stef Backhouse, Sarah and Andrew Carr, Pennie Saunders, and Phil Skinner.
