27th November 2018
Sunday 25th November saw 17 Waihi boys compete in the Longbeach Coastal Challenge, in both the 12km run and the 23km mountainbike event.
The day was wet, cold and very windy, and the boys all showed a lot of character and resilience to compete. Their supporters and parents, although wet and windblown, all agreed the boys did a fantastic job.
Will Saunders was the outstanding athlete of the day finishing as 1st U17 home and 5th overall in the 12km run.
Reef Roberts was the first Waihi boy home in the 23km mountainbike event, with Tom Taylor and Hugh Saunders 1st and 2nd Year 8 boys back. A special mention must go to Liam Ross, Logan Connolly and Patrick Raymond who were amongst the youngest boys to race.
Every Waihi boy finished the course with a smile frozen on to their face!
The hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and bacon sandwiches were a welcome sight after a very tough day.
